Nutrition Foods and Happiness

Nutritional Foods and HappinessIs there a link between nutrition foods and happiness?….Do certain foods make you feel happy?

Many nutritional experts have been finding that there is a strong link between nutrition foods and happiness – particularly foods like oily fish – herrings – sardines – mackerel – salmon and tuna and foods that contain tryptophan – which is mainly found in Turkey – chicken – fish – avocados – bananas – nuts – eggs – cheese and milk.

We all need protein – carbohydrates and fats to give us energy, rebuild muscle and cells etc but protein from these particular foods sources contain the much needed amino acid L-tryptophan which balances our mood!

Tryptophan is an amino acid which is converted into a hormone called serotonin in the brain. Serotonin has been found to be a natural anti-depressant along with Omega 3 oils from oily fish – both of these work together to create feelings of well being in the brain.

Serotonin relaxes the muscles in the body – It’s good for insomnia and can also help with pain management!

Eating a balanced diet that includes these foods on a regular basis can help promote feelings of happiness and contentment. Proteins that contain tryptophan are best eaten with small portions of slow release carbohydrates like brown rice – oats potatoes and wholemeal bread which slows the release of energy and balances blood sugar.

Eat organic foods as much as possible – or even better grow your own organic veg – It tastes so much better!

Serotonin is also helpful for reducing food cravings and binge eating!….Eating a good balance of nutrition foods that contain tryptophan at every meal and trying to avoid sugars and refined carbohydrates can be of great help in beating depression and stabilizing mood swings!

Refined or junk foods give us a quick hit and then quickly drop us down again so we crave more and more of them – it’s a vicious cycle!.

Normal levels of serotonin will help you kick the need for a sugar fix!.

There have been some interesting studies carried out about the effects Cod liver oil – on depression and some health practitioners are seeing good results from it’s use as a natural anti-depressant.

Apparently most of us don’t eat enough oily fish such as – Salmon, Mackerel, Trout or sardines etc which contains the essential Omega 3 oils found in Cod liver oil – as well as helping with depression it also claims to have other heath benefits – including reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes – It is said to improve brain power and helps protect against cancer and other diseases.

We’re supposed to eat 3 – 4 portions of oily fish a week!. However you can get a good supply from Cod liver oil supplements – 5mg’s a day is recommended by the manufacturers. Cod liver oil supplements can be bought inexpensively at most chemists and health stores

Other supplements suggested by health practitioners to help with depression and promote happiness are 5HTP and St Johns Wort which helps to raise serotonin in the brain….Sunlight helps us to make serotonin in the brain!.

Many people report that when they feel happy – they naturally want to eat these healthy nutrition foods which will of course make them happier and fitter – creating a positive cycle!.
